Week 42; August 25, 2014: Things are picking up!

So back before the mission, there was this foreign exchange student from Germany that was with this family in our ward. While she was there, she went to church each week, was taught by the missionaries, got fellow shipped by everyone in school and church, etc. and has been back in Germany for a little while now. It was a neat experience to see and kind of be a part of.

Why do I bring that up? Because last week, in the Pecos Park ward, there is a family hosting a foreign exchange student from Germany and has been taking her to church, getting fellow shipped by everyone in the ward and school, and is being taught by us (the missionaries.) Literally the exact same situation is being mirrored. That’s pretty cool! Obviously she won’t be able to baptized or anything while she’s here, but at least she can be taught all the lessons and know the church a lot so by the time she gets back to Germany, she can decide what she wants to do. And she’s going to be here for quite a while, so we’ll have plenty of time to work with her. Thus far, we have taught her the Restoration and Plan of Salvation and we were able to give her a German copy of the Book of Mormon and German copies of the missionary lesson pamphlets. So that’s been pretty sweet!

This week, we have also finally met with this family that we have been trying to get a hold of forever, but haven’t been able to. The story with this family is that their daughter (who is a freshman in High school) got baptized about a year ago and has then tried to introduce the Gospel to her parents. Her mother really wants to get baptized and has been coming to church each week the entire time I have been here, but the only hang-up is that she needs to get married with her boyfriend that she’s living with before she can get baptized. So we have been trying to get in and teach the boyfriend and then lead them along to getting them to get married. This last Tuesday, we were able to teach him the Restoration and gave him a copy of the Book of Mormon. He seems fairly receptive, but he hasn’t really talked a whole lot, so I’m not entirely sure. But we took the mother over to the Mesa Temple Visitor’s Center last Saturday and took her through the “God’s Plan for His Family” display and she absolutely loved it. The spirit was strong and she was crying all the way through the Visitor’s Center. I’m sure it really hit home to them that they needed to get married soon. She wants to go through it again with her boyfriend, so hopefully we can get that set up and that can help speed things along with them getting married (and hopefully the boyfriend will make the decision of getting baptized himself as well throughout this whole process. That’ll be pretty cool)

Well, amidst all the chaos, things have really been picking up in this area! YAAAAY!!!

Oh, and last Monday, I finally took the time to make the B-Day cake from the ingredients I got from my Birthday package… an entire month late, but oh well! It turned out pretty good.

Hope you all have a great week!

Love, Elder Foxx
